Kilbirnie sits about 3km southeast of the CBD, with no strong natural boundaries separating it from Lyall Bay, Rongotai and Miramar — apart from the town belt to the west, which divides it from Newtown. The suburb takes its name from Kilbirnie in Scotland, chosen by original landowner Coutts Crawford, whose estate covered the area until it was subdivided for housing in the 1870s.
In the 1880s Kilbirnie was remote and hard to reach because of rough terrain; that changed once trams reached the outlying villages of Brooklyn, Kilbirnie, Miramar and Seatoun by 1906. Today it's one of Wellington's major sports and community hubs, with Kilbirnie Park hosting the Poneke Football Club, Poneke Kilbirnie Softball Club and Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club, alongside the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre and Ākau Tangi Sports Centre.
