LIVING IN MIRAMAR.
Miramar sits on the peninsula of the same name, on what was originally Motu Kairangi — an island connected to the mainland by the reclamation and land upheaval that followed the 1855 Wairarapa earthquake. Miramar Borough was formed in 1904 and became part of Wellington City in 1921, after which it developed into one of the city's larger and more established eastern suburbs.
Miramar is best known today as the centre of New Zealand's screen production industry — home to Weta Workshop (the special-effects and props studio behind The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and more), alongside Stone Street Studios and Park Road Post Production. Victoria University of Wellington's Miramar Creative Centre, opened in 2017 in partnership with Weta, places screen and design students directly in the industry hub.
Beyond film, Miramar retains a strong local-village feel, with a shopping centre on Miramar Avenue, several parks, and easy access to the airport and eastern bays. As of June 2025 the population was estimated at 9,900.

A DAY IN MIRAMAR.
