Northland sits in west-central Wellington, bordering Highbury, Kelburn, Thorndon, Wilton, Wadestown and Karori. Part of the area was originally known as Creswick, until landowner C.J. Pharazyn developed new roads and building sites in the late 19th century and marketed the whole area as "Northland" — at the time, The Evening Post described it as Wellington's "best suburb."
The land was farmed until 1900, when it was subdivided for housing, but remained relatively isolated until trams reached the Northland shops in 1929, spurring further residential development. Today Northland is close to Victoria University's Kelburn campus, giving it a distinctive mix of long-time homeowning families, young professionals, and university flatting communities.
